Cocktail 2 Crosses Original’s Lifetime Box Office Collection in Just Nine Days

Despite witnessing the expected slowdown after a strong opening weekend, Cocktail 2 has reached a significant milestone at the box office. The Shahid Kapoor, Kriti Sanon and Rashmika Mandanna-starrer has surpassed the lifetime India collection of the 2012 hit Cocktail in just nine days.

According to trade tracker Sacnilk, the romantic drama earned an estimated ₹4.25 crore on its ninth day, taking its India net collection to ₹78.75 crore. The film’s India gross now stands at ₹93.97 crore, comfortably overtaking the original Cocktail, which had concluded its theatrical run with ₹71 crore in India.

Released on June 19, Cocktail 2 enjoyed an impressive opening weekend, collecting ₹13.50 crore on Friday, ₹16.25 crore on Saturday and ₹17.75 crore on Sunday for a three-day total of ₹47.50 crore.

The momentum slowed during the weekdays, with the film earning ₹6.75 crore each on Monday and Tuesday, ₹5.25 crore on Wednesday and ₹4.25 crore on Thursday, wrapping up its first week with a healthy ₹70.50 crore net.

However, the second week has seen collections dip further. The film managed ₹4.25 crore on its second Friday, while early estimates suggest it added around ₹2.89 crore on Saturday. Instead of enjoying the customary weekend jump, Cocktail 2 has continued to trend downward.

Trade observers attribute the slowdown to mixed audience reception. While the original film earned lasting popularity for its fresh take on relationships and memorable characters, the sequel has received a more divided response from critics and moviegoers.

The film is also contending with fresh competition at the box office, including Welcome To The Jungle, Main Vaapas Aaunga and several regional releases. Its theatrical footprint has also shrunk considerably, with the number of shows dropping from 8,469 on Day 7 to 5,965 on Day 8 and just 3,338 on Day 9.

Even so, the ₹100-crore milestone remains within striking distance. The film needs a little over ₹21 crore more in India net collections to enter the coveted club, although current trends suggest it could finish its theatrical run in the ₹85-90 crore range unless collections witness a turnaround.

Directed by Homi Adajania, Cocktail 2 serves as a spiritual sequel to the 2012 romantic drama. Written by Luv Ranjan and Tarun Jain, the film is jointly produced by Dinesh Vijan, Luv Ranjan and Ankur Garg under Maddock Films and Luv Films. While the original starred Saif Ali Khan, Deepika Padukone and Diana Penty, the sequel features Shahid Kapoor, Kriti Sanon and Rashmika Mandanna in the lead roles.

In its review, News18 Showsha described the film as visually appealing but weighed down by a familiar narrative. The review noted that while the first half is breezy and entertaining, the film’s lengthy runtime and predictable love triangle prevent it from matching the freshness of its predecessor. It also praised a few emotionally engaging moments but observed that the screenplay misses opportunities to explore its characters in greater depth.
