Delhi CM Rekha Gupta Attacked During ‘Jan Sunwai’; Accused Sent to 5-Day Police Custody.

Delhi Police registered an attempt-to-murder FIR against Rajesh Bhai Khimji Bhai Sakriya, 41, following his attack on Chief Minister Rekha Gupta during a weekly ‘Jan Sunwai’ programme at her residence on Wednesday.

Sakriya allegedly handed over a paper to Gupta before slapping her, pulling her hair, and hurling abuses, refusing to let go until security personnel intervened. He was overpowered on the spot and later produced in court, where he was remanded to five days of police custody.

The accused, a resident of Rajkot, Gujarat, reportedly has a criminal history, having faced multiple cases under Indian Penal Code sections related to grievous hurt with dangerous means and intentional insult to provoke breach of peace, according to Delhi Police sources.

Delhi CM’s Response
Hours after the incident, CM Gupta described the attack as a “cowardly attempt on our resolve to serve Delhi” in a post on X. She emphasized that the assault was not just personal but aimed at disrupting the government’s public welfare efforts.

Political Fallout
The attack sparked a political row. The ruling BJP alleged a conspiracy by opposition parties, while the AAP and Congress condemned the violence, stressing that such incidents have no place in a democratic setup.

Authorities continue to investigate the motive behind the assault and have assured strict action against the perpetrator.
