India is witnessing a rise in seasonal influenza infections, with health authorities stepping up surveillance and issuing precautionary advisories as H1N1, Influenza B and Covid cases continue to be detected.
Delhi has reported 2,308 H1N1, commonly known as swine flu, cases, with officials describing the tally as significantly higher than the average recorded in previous years. The increase has prompted the Delhi government to issue a public advisory, urging people to take precautions, particularly in crowded places.
Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) Director General Rajiv Bahl said around 650 cases of another flu variant have also been detected. Authorities have advised people to follow basic precautions similar to those adopted during the Covid pandemic, while clarifying that masks are not mandatory.
Delhi Government Steps Up Preparedness
The Delhi Health Department is closely monitoring the situation, with the government maintaining that it is prepared to handle any increase in cases.
Health Minister Pankaj Singh said there was no reason for people to panic, adding that hospitals have adequate beds, doctors and medicines. He said around 3,000 patients with H1N1 and other flu variants have sought treatment and are recovering.
Of the cases reported, 2,308 were identified as H1N1, while another 600-650 cases involved a different flu variant. Singh also said Delhi had recorded around 2,200 dengue cases in the latest assessment.
According to the minister, no deaths have been reported from the current infections, while no patients are in critical condition, on ventilators or in intensive care units.
H1N1 isolation wards have also been established at hospitals. Singh said action would be taken if any patient is denied a hospital bed.
The public has been advised to wear masks in crowded areas, maintain respiratory hygiene and remain vigilant without becoming alarmed.
H1N1 Circulating Across India
Bahl said India’s ability to monitor circulating viruses has improved considerably since the Covid pandemic. The country’s surveillance network now allows health authorities to identify respiratory viruses and track changes in their prevalence.
According to Bahl, 73 laboratories are part of the surveillance network. Around 25 samples are tested every week from patients with severe acute respiratory infections and other illnesses, with testing covering a range of viruses.
The surveillance data currently indicates significant circulation of H1N1 across the country.
Influenza B And Covid Also Detected
Bahl said H1N1 is currently the dominant respiratory virus being detected, although Influenza B is also circulating. Some Covid cases have also been reported.
The surveillance data therefore points to the circulation of three respiratory viruses — Influenza A, Influenza B and Covid — with authorities monitoring the situation on a weekly basis.
The surveillance system is also used to track other infections, including diarrhoeal illnesses and cases of undifferentiated fever, helping officials identify which viruses are circulating at a given time.
Seasonal Flu, Not A New Virus
Bahl said the current rise in H1N1 infections does not indicate the emergence of a new virus or a fundamentally different strain. Influenza viruses regularly undergo mutations, meaning infection in one season does not necessarily provide protection against infection in another.
He said most flu infections are mild, although serious illness can occur, particularly among young children, people above 65, immunocompromised individuals and pregnant women.
What To Do If You Develop Flu Symptoms
People experiencing typical flu symptoms should rest, eat properly and maintain adequate fluid intake. Bahl said most people can recover with two to three days of rest and supportive care.
Because flu spreads through respiratory droplets, people with symptoms should avoid close contact with others and maintain good hygiene. Frequently touched surfaces should also be kept clean, while people should avoid touching their faces unnecessarily.
Antibiotics do not treat influenza because it is a viral infection. Antiviral medicines may be recommended in cases involving people at higher risk of severe illness, based on medical advice.
When To Seek Medical Care
People experiencing warning signs such as breathing difficulties or chest pain should seek medical attention promptly, although serious complications remain uncommon.
Flu vaccines are also available in India, with multiple vaccines licensed for use. Bahl said vaccination is particularly recommended for people at higher risk, in line with World Health Organization recommendations, although it is not mandatory.
Authorities have urged residents to remain cautious, follow basic preventive measures and seek medical care when necessary, while continuing to monitor the changing pattern of respiratory infections across the country.
