DMK Mouthpiece Criticises Vijay Over Trisha’s Presence at Independence Day Event

Days after DMK leader Udhayanidhi Stalin drew controversy over remarks involving actor Trisha, the party’s mouthpiece has taken aim at Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Vijay over the actor’s presence at an official Independence Day function.

In an editorial published by Murasoli, the DMK criticised Vijay for having Trisha seated in the front row during the Independence Day celebrations at Fort St George on Saturday. The editorial questioned the propriety of the interaction between the two during the event and described it in strongly worded terms.

Trisha attended the Tamil Nadu government’s Independence Day programme and was seated alongside Vijay’s parents in the front row. Wearing a yellow saree, she was seen saluting Vijay as he hoisted the national flag and took part in the ceremonial proceedings.

The actor’s presence at the event quickly attracted attention, particularly because she has also appeared at other prominent occasions involving Vijay. She attended his swearing-in ceremony in May and was seen becoming emotional during the event.

Vijay and Trisha’s friendship has frequently been the subject of public speculation, with their professional association and appearances together drawing considerable attention.

The controversy comes against the backdrop of developments in Vijay’s personal life. His wife, Sangeetha, had filed for divorce in February 2026, citing allegations including mental cruelty, emotional neglect, desertion and adultery. She subsequently withdrew the petition earlier this month.

The DMK editorial used the occasion to launch a broader political attack on Vijay, questioning the conduct of a chief minister at an official national event.

It also claimed that even sections of Vijay’s supporters were uncomfortable with Trisha being given a prominent place at the Independence Day function and the two exchanging salutes.

The criticism adds another layer to the increasingly sharp political exchanges between the DMK and Vijay, who has emerged as a prominent political challenger in Tamil Nadu.
