Donald Trump floats ‘finishing off’ Iran to push reluctant allies into action

United States President Donald Trump on Wednesday signalled the possibility of stronger action against Iran, while also taking a veiled swipe at allies over the strategic Strait of Hormuz.

In a post on Truth Social, Trump said, “I wonder what would happen if we ‘finished off’ what’s left of the Iranian Terror State, and let the Countries that use it — we don’t — be responsible for the so-called ‘Strait?’ That would get some of our non-responsive ‘Allies’ in gear, and fast!!!”

In another post, he reiterated his long-standing criticism of Iran, calling it the “number one state sponsor of terror.” “Remember, for all of those absolute ‘fools’ out there, Iran is considered, by everyone, to be the NUMBER ONE STATE SPONSOR OF TERROR,” he wrote, adding that the United States was “rapidly putting them out of business.”

NATO stance draws criticism

Trump’s remarks came a day after he criticised NATO, saying he was “disappointed” and accusing the alliance of making a “foolish mistake” in its approach to Iran.

According to Trump, several NATO allies had indicated they did not want to be involved in US military operations targeting Iran. “The United States has been informed by most of our NATO ‘Allies’ that they don’t want to get involved with our Military Operation against the Terrorist Regime of Iran,” he said, while insisting that many countries still agreed Iran must not be allowed to develop nuclear weapons.

Despite the lack of allied participation, Trump claimed the US had already achieved significant “military success” and did not require NATO’s support. He added that countries such as Japan, Australia, and South Korea were also not needed for the operations.
