Should You Eat Papaya in Winter? Expert Explains

Papaya is a versatile fruit packed with health benefits—it aids digestion, supports weight management, and boosts immunity. But can you enjoy it during winter?

Dr Anamika Gaur, former dietitian at Delhi’s GTB Hospital, says that while people often prefer warm foods in colder months, papaya can be eaten year-round. Its enzyme papain helps with digestion, constipation, acidity, and indigestion—common winter concerns.

Winter Benefits of Papaya

Gut health: Helps cleanse the intestines, especially when physical activity drops in winter.

Immunity booster: Rich in vitamin C and antioxidants, it supports the body in fighting colds and flu.

Weight management: Low in calories, high in fibre, and keeps you full for longer, helping control hunger.

How to eat: Consume 5–6 pieces (up to 200g) in the morning on an empty stomach. Avoid eating papaya straight from the fridge. If you have a mild cold or cough, drink lukewarm water first. For severe symptoms, it’s better to skip papaya.
