Emraan Hashmi On Choosing Taskaree: “An Intelligent Take on Heroism”

Actor Emraan Hashmi has said he was drawn to Taskaree: The Smuggler’s Web for its grounded and intelligent portrayal of heroism, describing the series as one that values quiet courage and discipline over loud bravado.

The trailer of the upcoming streaming series was unveiled on Wednesday, offering a glimpse into a high-stakes battle of wits within the world of government customs, where intelligence is currency and a single misstep can undo weeks of surveillance.

Speaking about the project, Hashmi said the response to the teaser had been encouraging and described Taskaree as a rewarding first collaboration with creator Neeraj Pandey. “What stood out to me about the series was its grounded, intelligent take on heroism — a story driven by quiet courage, discipline and duty rather than loud bravado,” he said, adding that the cast and crew worked relentlessly to bring the world of the show to life.

The series traces major smuggling corridors across Al-Dera, Addis Ababa, Milan and Bangkok, revealing the complex mechanics of international smuggling built on coded routes, false manifests and calculated misdirection. At the heart of the story is a specialised customs task force operating out of Mumbai International Airport.

Hashmi plays Arjun Meena, an uncompromisingly honest customs officer who leads a team that includes Mitali Kamath (Amruta Khanvilkar), Ravinder Gujjar (Nandish Singh Sandhu) and Prakash Kumar (Anurag Sinha). Relying equally on instinct and intelligence, the officers work under constant pressure, aware that one overlooked detail could unravel their entire operation.

Standing in opposition is Bada Chaudhary, portrayed by Sharad Kelkar, whose powerful smuggling syndicate functions through layers of deception and global routes designed to evade detection.

Creator Neeraj Pandey said customs enforcement was a world he had long wanted to explore. He described the series as a quiet, high-pressure crime thriller shaped by realism and authenticity, adding that the collaboration with Netflix followed the success of the Khakee franchise.

Taskaree: The Smuggler’s Web will stream on Netflix from January 14, 2026.
