Veteran Leader Shibu Soren, Key Architect of Jharkhand Statehood, Dies at 81.

Shibu Soren, veteran tribal leader, three-time Chief Minister of Jharkhand, former Union Minister, and one of the founding members of the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM), passed away on Sunday at the age of 81. He had been undergoing treatment at Delhi’s Sir Ganga Ram Hospital for over a month and had been in critical condition in recent days.

His son, Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren, confirmed the news on X (formerly Twitter), writing, “Beloved Dishom Guruji has left us. I lost everything today.”

The hospital said Mr. Soren was admitted on June 19 and was under the care of senior nephrologist Dr. A.K. Bhalla. “Despite the best efforts of our multidisciplinary team, Mr. Shibu Soren passed away peacefully on August 4, 2025, surrounded by family,” the hospital said in a statement, offering condolences to his family and the people of Jharkhand.

Born into the Santhal community in Ramgarh (then in Bihar), Shibu Soren became a central figure in the movement for a separate Jharkhand state. In 1972, he co-founded the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha along with Left leader A.K. Roy and Binod Bihari Mahato. The movement culminated in the creation of Jharkhand in 2000, with Soren hailed as a driving force behind its formation.

Over a political career spanning more than four decades, he was elected to the Lok Sabha eight times and served two terms in the Rajya Sabha—the second of which was ongoing at the time of his death.

Soren first entered Parliament in 1980, winning from Dumka, a constituency that became a JMM stronghold under his leadership. He served three terms as Chief Minister of Jharkhand but was unable to complete any of them due to shifting political alliances and coalition instability.

He held key positions in the Union Cabinet, including that of Coal Minister in the Manmohan Singh government. However, his ministerial journey was marked by controversy. In 2006, he was convicted in the murder of his former secretary, Shashinath Jha, becoming the first Union Minister to be found guilty in a murder case—a verdict later overturned by the Delhi High Court.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid tribute to the late leader, calling him a “grassroots statesman.” “Shri Shibu Soren Ji was a grassroots leader who rose through the ranks with unwavering dedication to the people. He was particularly passionate about tribal empowerment and the upliftment of the poor. Pained by his passing away,” PM Modi said in a post, adding that he had spoken to Hemant Soren to offer his condolences.

Mr. Soren is survived by his wife Roopi Soren, sons Hemant and Basant, and daughter Anjali. His elder son, Durga Soren, passed away in 2009. Hemant Soren currently serves as Jharkhand’s Chief Minister and recently took over as JMM president, while Basant is an MLA.
