Hemant Soren Assures Protesting Students Of Action, Appeals For Peace After Police Crackdown

Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren on Monday appealed for calm after police action during a student-led ‘Vidhan Sabha Gherao’ march, assuring protesters that the government had heard their concerns and would consider their demands with “utmost seriousness and sensitivity.”

In a post on X, Soren said the students had raised their concerns peacefully and had every right to express their views in a democracy. He said it was the government’s responsibility to listen to and respect their voices.

“The government has heard you,” Soren said, adding that senior ministers had been in continuous dialogue with the protesting students.

He assured the students that their demands would be addressed seriously and said the government was working to fix shortcomings in the examination system to prevent similar issues in the future.

Govt Plans Changes To Examination System

Soren said his government was working towards making Jharkhand’s examination system “more transparent, technology-enabled, secure, and accountable.”

He added that students would have an important role in bringing about these changes.

The Chief Minister said the government wanted Jharkhand to demonstrate how contentious issues could be resolved through dialogue and constructive solutions rather than prolonged disputes.

“Let us resolve this issue together through dialogue and trust,” he said.

Soren Accuses Opposition Of Trying To Mislead Students

Soren also alleged that some Opposition-linked individuals had attempted to interfere with the student movement and mislead protesters for political gains.

He urged students not to be influenced by what he described as such “political narratives.”

Calling students the future of Jharkhand, Soren said addressing their concerns was an important responsibility of the government.

Remarks Follow Police-Protester Clashes

Soren’s statement came hours after clashes were reported between police and protesters during the ‘Vidhan Sabha Gherao’ march.

Several protesters were reportedly injured during the police action. Student leader Devendra Nath Mahto was also taken to hospital after his health deteriorated amid the ongoing agitation.

The Chief Minister’s appeal comes as the government seeks to ease tensions and address the students’ concerns through continued dialogue.
