Harmanpreet Kaur Gets Emotional After Rediscovering Her Batting Rhythm Against Zimbabwe
Harmanpreet Kaur delivered a stunning batting performance against Zimbabwe, but the emotions she displayed during a mid-innings interview revealed that the knock meant much more to her than the runs she scored. The experienced Indian batter spoke about rediscovering the joy of batting and thanked former India coach WV Raman for encouraging her to trust her natural game.
Harmanpreet remained unbeaten on 91 off just 41 deliveries in the third and final Women’s T20I against Zimbabwe in Raipur on Tuesday. Her explosive innings helped India post 216 for seven before the hosts registered a comprehensive 92-run victory to complete a 3-0 series sweep.
During the mid-innings interview, Harmanpreet explained that her primary aim was to spend more time at the crease and enjoy batting without putting herself under unnecessary pressure.
“Just wanted to enjoy myself, just wanted to bat as long as possible, and glad that I was able to do that,” she said.
The emotional moment came when she acknowledged Raman, who was conducting the interview, for offering her a straightforward but meaningful piece of advice.
“The moment we came, you stepped in and you said, ‘Now you do what you want to do,’ and that’s what I want to do, and really want to enjoy myself. Thanks for those words,” Harmanpreet told him.
Her response offered a glimpse into the challenges of maintaining confidence while carrying the expectations associated with being one of India’s most experienced cricketers.
Harmanpreet Rediscovers Her Attacking Touch
The 37-year-old showcased her trademark aggression, smashing 10 fours and five sixes during her unbeaten 91. Her innings proved instrumental in setting up India’s commanding total and securing the series sweep.
Speaking after the match, Harmanpreet again emphasised the importance of enjoying her time at the crease and expressed satisfaction at converting her opportunity into a substantial score.
“I enjoyed myself in the middle. This is what I’m here for. I just want to enjoy my batting and good that those runs came,” she said during the post-match presentation.
The batter revealed that an early boundary helped her settle into the innings. Convinced that the pitch was good and her bat was connecting well with the ball, she decided to continue playing positively.
She explained that the confidence gained from that initial shot encouraged her to maintain the attacking approach rather than overthink her batting.
Batting Coach’s Advice Helps Restore Confidence
Harmanpreet also credited batting coach Himanshu for helping her refine her technique following the Women’s T20 Asia Cup. She particularly highlighted the importance of her bat swing, describing it as a key element of her batting.
According to Harmanpreet, the focus during net sessions was on repeatedly practising the movements that come naturally to her.
She also praised her coach for simulating match pressure during training, allowing her to become more comfortable with challenging situations before facing them in actual games.
The approach, she indicated, helped her manage pressure more effectively and contributed to the confidence she displayed against Zimbabwe.
A Fresh Phase After Stepping Down as Captain
Harmanpreet’s impressive performance comes at an important stage in her international career. She stepped down from India’s captaincy across formats ahead of the Zimbabwe series, with Smriti Mandhana taking over the leadership responsibilities.
The transition marks a new phase for the veteran batter, who has spent years balancing her individual performances with the demands of leading the national team.
However, her emotional comments in Raipur focused primarily on regaining confidence in her batting, appreciating the support she received and enjoying her time in the middle.
For India, Harmanpreet’s return to an aggressive and fluent style of batting is an encouraging sign. Her experience and ability to accelerate the scoring rate remain valuable assets in the middle order.
ODI Series Offers Another Opportunity
India’s three-match ODI series against Zimbabwe is scheduled to begin in Vadodara on October 23, providing Harmanpreet with another opportunity to build on the momentum generated by her T20I performance.
Although one innings cannot, by itself, settle questions about a player’s form, her unbeaten 91 demonstrated the impact she can make when she trusts her instincts and executes her plans confidently.
In Raipur, the runs underlined her batting ability, while her emotional interview highlighted the personal importance of finding enjoyment in the game again.
As she begins this new chapter without the captaincy, Harmanpreet will look to carry that confidence forward and continue contributing with the bat for India.
