Tamil Nadu Braces for Week-Long Rain: Puducherry Schools Closed Amid Downpour.
Chennai is set for a cloudy, rain-dominated week, with intermittent light showers expected across most days, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) reported. While the overall pattern remains stable, the IMD has issued stronger weather alerts for two days.
Warmer Nights Across the State
Night-time temperatures have risen slightly above normal in Chennai and other districts, including Coimbatore, Dharmapuri, Salem, Tirupattur, and Tiruvallur, with minimums 1.6°C to 3°C higher than usual. Erode and Madurai airports recorded the highest daytime temperature in Tamil Nadu at 32°C, while Karur Paramathi saw the lowest minimum at 20°C.
Schools Closed in Puducherry and Karaikal
Continuous rainfall since Saturday caused widespread waterlogging, disrupting daily life in Puducherry and Karaikal. Authorities declared Monday a holiday for all schools and colleges, both government and private, according to Home and Education Minister A. Namassivayam.
IMD Issues Heavy Rain Warning
The IMD has warned of intense rainfall in southern and delta districts, with heavy rain expected at isolated locations in Kanyakumari, Tirunelveli, Tenkasi, Thoothukudi, Ramanathapuram, Virudhunagar, Pudukkottai, Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, Nagapattinam, Mayiladuthurai, and Karaikal.
Why Tamil Nadu Is Experiencing Heavy Rain
Several developing weather systems in the Bay of Bengal and surrounding seas are driving the state’s prolonged wet spell:
A low-pressure area near the South Andaman Sea is strengthening and may intensify into a depression by Monday, potentially becoming a cyclonic storm. Its west-northwest movement is channeling moisture into Tamil Nadu, triggering rain and thunderstorms.
Another circulation near the Comorin region is expected to form a fresh low-pressure area by November 25, adding further moisture. A third system over the Southeast Arabian Sea is contributing to unstable atmospheric conditions.
Together, these systems are bringing heavier rain to southern districts, while Chennai continues to see light to moderate showers with occasional thunderstorms.
