A rangoli featuring the phrase “I Love Muhammad” triggered violent clashes in Ahilyanagar, Maharashtra, on Sunday, leading to the arrest of 30 people.

Tensions flared after some local residents considered the artwork offensive, escalating into stone-pelting and confrontations between communities.

Police intervened to restore order, filing cases under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code. Authorities have appealed for calm and warned against further gatherings that could exacerbate communal tensions.

Eyewitnesses reported that the dispute started during a local festival when the rangoli was displayed outside a private residence. The situation quickly escalated as groups clashed, prompting a strong police presence to contain the violence.

Officials confirmed that the detainees include both organizers of the rangoli and those involved in the clashes. “We are investigating the incident thoroughly and will take strict action against anyone disturbing public peace,” said the local police chief.
