India continued to hold the No.1 position in the latest ICC Men’s ODI Team Rankings despite a minor drop in rating points following the annual update released by the International Cricket Council on Tuesday.
The Shubman Gill-led side remain at the top with 118 rating points, maintaining a five-point lead over New Zealand, who stay second with 113 points. Australia retained third place with 109 points as the top three positions remained unchanged after the update.
The revised rankings arrive at an important stage with teams beginning to sharpen their focus on qualification for the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2027.
“India remain at the pinnacle of the ICC Men’s ODI Team Rankings after the latest annual update, leading second-placed New Zealand by five points, while Australia retain third place,” the ICC said in its official statement.
Although India lost one rating point compared to the previous rankings cycle, they comfortably stayed ahead of the chasing pack. South Africa emerged as one of the biggest movers, climbing to fourth position with 102 points after overtaking Pakistan, who slipped to fifth with 98 points.
Sri Lanka, Afghanistan and England retained their spots in the top eight, while Bangladesh remained ninth ahead of the West Indies.
The ICC also clarified the methodology used for the latest update.
“The annual rankings update applies full weightage to matches played since May 2025, while matches from the previous two years are weighted at 50 percent,” the governing body explained.
World Cup qualification battle gains importance
The latest rankings update has also added greater significance to the race for direct qualification for the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2027.
As per ICC qualification rules, the top eight-ranked ODI teams as of March 31, 2027 will earn direct qualification alongside hosts South Africa and Zimbabwe.
“The top eight teams in the ICC Rankings as of March 31, 2027 will secure direct qualification alongside hosts South Africa and Zimbabwe, who have automatically qualified,” the ICC stated.
Since South Africa are already assured of qualification as co-hosts, the ninth-ranked team could also gain direct entry if the Proteas finish inside the top eight by the cut-off date.
Further down the table, Ireland climbed above Zimbabwe into 11th place, while the USA overtook Scotland to move into 13th. The UAE also improved their standing, rising to 19th after surpassing Canada in the updated rankings.
