India issues advisory for nationals in Mali amid security developments

India has advised its nationals in Mali to stay indoors and remain alert following fresh security concerns in the country.

In an advisory, the Embassy of India in Bamako urged Indian citizens to exercise extreme caution after reports of attacks in Kati and other regions.

“Due to recent security developments and reported attacks in Kati and other parts of Mali, all Indian nationals are advised to remain highly vigilant, stay indoors, and strictly follow instructions issued by Malian authorities,” the embassy said.

Embassy monitoring situation

The embassy added that it is closely monitoring developments in coordination with local authorities and will issue updates as required. Indian nationals were also asked to stay connected through official channels and contact the embassy in case of emergencies.

Attacks reported across Mali

The advisory follows a wave of coordinated attacks across the country, including in the capital Bamako. Mali’s army said it was engaged in fighting “terrorist groups” after armed assailants targeted military installations.

Explosions and gunfire were reported early Saturday near Kati, a key military base outside Bamako and home to military ruler Assimi Goita.

Residents said the residence of Defence Minister Sadio Camara was also targeted. While some reports suggested damage to the property, officials said Camara was not present and remained safe.

Unrest in multiple regions

Violence was also reported in other parts of the country, including Sevare, Kidal and Gao. A spokesperson for the Tuareg-led Azawad Liberation Front claimed its forces had taken control of Kidal and parts of Gao, though this could not be independently verified.

Ongoing instability

Mali has faced persistent instability since coups in 2020 and 2021 brought Assimi Goita to power. The country continues to battle multiple insurgencies, including groups linked to al-Qaeda and Islamic State, along with a long-running Tuareg rebellion in the north.
