India’s long-term plans to host the Olympic Games, according to a report by The Guardian. The report suggests that unresolved bilateral tensions could harm India’s credibility as a potential host.
India’s Olympic Ambitions
India has been open about its plans to host major international sporting events. In November, Ahmedabad was confirmed as the host for the 2030 Commonwealth Games, and the government has also expressed interest in bidding for the 2036 Olympics.
T20 World Cup Controversy
Tensions between India and Bangladesh escalated after the death of a Hindu man in Bangladesh. The controversy intensified when Kolkata Knight Riders picked Mustafizur Rahman in the IPL auction. Following directives from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), KKR released the player, which led Bangladesh to boycott the T20 World Cup, citing security concerns.
The International Cricket Council (ICC) put the matter to a vote, with 14 member nations opposing moving Bangladesh’s match out of the country. After Bangladesh refused to travel, they were replaced by Scotland.
IOC’s Position
Unlike the ICC, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) is unlikely to tolerate political influence in sporting events. An unnamed source reportedly warned that India’s chances of hosting the Olympics could be “unthinkable” if there were risks of other nations boycotting. The IOC maintains neutrality, acting independently of commercial or political pressures while avoiding racial or religious considerations.
Way Forward
The report notes that India’s Olympic aspirations are not over. The country would need to improve relations with Bangladesh and Pakistan to demonstrate its ability to host international events credibly.
