IPL 2026 could be MS Dhoni’s last season, says former CSK player

Speculation around MS Dhoni’s future in the Indian Premier League has intensified, with former India batter Robin Uthappa suggesting that the 2026 season could mark the end of an era for the iconic wicketkeeper-batter.

Dhoni, who is set to feature in what would be his 19th IPL season, has been synonymous with the Chennai Super Kings since the league’s inception. With 278 matches and 5,439 runs, he remains one of the tournament’s most influential figures, having led CSK to five titles before stepping down as captain ahead of the 2024 season.

Although he briefly returned to lead the side following an injury to Ruturaj Gaikwad last year, the franchise is now firmly building towards a new chapter under Gaikwad’s leadership.

Speaking on JioHotstar, Uthappa indicated that Dhoni’s role could evolve significantly in what he believes may be a farewell campaign. He expects the veteran to adopt a more “hands-off” approach, possibly taking on a mentor-cum-player role while batting lower down the order to ease himself out of the side.

The comments come amid growing chatter about succession planning, especially after CSK’s move to bring in Sanju Samson, a decision widely seen as part of a long-term transition strategy.

Despite the retirement buzz, Dhoni’s preparations tell a different story. The 44-year-old has already joined the CSK camp in Chennai after beginning light training in Ranchi weeks earlier, signalling his intent to remain fully competitive for the upcoming season.

Addressing speculation over his availability, CSK CEO Kasi Viswanathan confirmed that Dhoni will be part of the squad throughout IPL 2026, though his exact role will depend on team strategy and workload management.

This opens the door for a flexible role, where Dhoni could balance limited on-field duties with mentorship responsibilities. His presence will be particularly vital as CSK look to recover from a disappointing IPL 2025 campaign, where they finished at the bottom of the table for the first time.

As the franchise eyes a reset under Gaikwad, IPL 2026 could represent both a new beginning and a fitting farewell for one of the game’s greatest finishers.
