The sacred Himalayas came alive on Wednesday as the doors of Kedarnath Temple opened at 8 am, marking the beginning of the Kedarnath Yatra 2026.
Nestled amid snow-covered peaks, the revered shrine welcomed devotees from across the country in a grand ceremonial start to the pilgrimage season. The temple was adorned with around 51 quintals of fresh flowers, adding vibrant colour to its ancient stone structure. Pushkar Singh Dhami was among those present to witness the opening, as thousands gathered for the first darshan of the season.
Notably, the yatra has begun nearly 10 days earlier than last year, when the temple opened on May 2. The early start offers pilgrims a longer window to undertake the journey. While Kedarnath opened on April 22, Badrinath Temple will open on April 23, following the opening of Gangotri Temple and Yamunotri Temple on April 19.
New rules for Kedarnath Yatra
Authorities have introduced stricter norms this year to maintain the sanctity of the temple:
Mobile phones banned: Devices are not allowed inside the temple complex.
No photography or reels: Capturing photos, videos, or social media content is strictly prohibited.
Penalties for violations: Action will be taken against those breaking the rules.
Registration details
Registration remains mandatory for all pilgrims:
Online process: Devotees must register through the official Uttarakhand government portal.
Verification: Identity and vehicle details are checked at designated points along the route.
Darshan tokens: Carrying valid documents is essential to obtain entry slots for a smooth visit.
How to reach Kedarnath
Trek route
The journey begins from Gaurikund, the base for the 16-km trek to the temple. While scenic, the route involves steep climbs, making early starts and regular breaks important.
Pony and palanquin services
Ponies: Take around 7–8 hours and reduce physical strain.
Palkis: A 5–6 hour option, more comfortable but relatively expensive.
Helicopter services
Helicopter services operate from Phata, Guptkashi, and Sirsi, cutting travel time to 10–15 minutes. Given the high demand, advance booking is recommended.
With an early opening and tighter regulations, Kedarnath Yatra 2026 is set for a busy season, drawing thousands of devotees to the Himalayan shrine.
