Delhi Capitals produced yet another lifeless performance on Friday, folding under pressure in a must-win clash at the Arun Jaitley Stadium.
After throwing away a promising start with the bat and crawling through the middle overs, they meekly surrendered a modest target of 142 as Kolkata Knight Riders stormed to a crushing win led by Finn Allen’s breathtaking century.
The Kiwi opener finally delivered on his immense promise, smashing his maiden IPL hundred in just 47 balls as KKR chased down the target in only 14.2 overs. Allen, who had repeatedly fallen early while trying to force the pace this season, showed greater composure before unleashing absolute carnage against Delhi’s spinners. He hammered 10 sixes, many of them against Kuldeep Yadav and Vipraj Nigam, and fittingly sealed the match with another maximum that also brought up his century.
Delhi’s downfall, however, began much earlier with the bat. Despite a brisk opening stand and a fluent fifty from Pathum Nissanka, the hosts completely lost direction once KKR’s spinners tightened the screws. The Capitals consumed a staggering 51 dot balls in their innings, a statistic that perfectly captured their inability to build momentum.
Sunil Narine, Varun Chakaravarthy and Anukul Roy strangled Delhi through the middle overs with relentless accuracy. Roy, often overshadowed by KKR’s senior spin stars, turned the game decisively by dismissing both Nissanka and Tristan Stubbs in the same over. From 80 for 3 after ten overs, Delhi collapsed into survival mode, managing only 11 runs across a painfully slow five-over stretch.
Axar Patel endured another forgettable outing with the bat, crawling to 11 off 22 deliveries, while Ashutosh Sharma’s late cameo merely pushed the total to a below-par 142. Kartik Tyagi closed the innings superbly, conceding just three runs in the final over.
If Delhi’s innings lacked intent, KKR’s chase was the complete opposite. Allen and Cameron Green dismantled the attack with a stunning 114-run partnership off just 64 deliveries, exposing the gulf in confidence and execution between the two sides.
The result marks KKR’s fourth straight victory and keeps their playoff hopes alive after a disastrous start to the season. The three-time champions have clawed their way back into contention and now sit within touching distance of the top four race.
For Delhi Capitals, however, the defeat all but ends their campaign. With five losses in six home games and only eight points from 11 matches, their playoff hopes now depend on near-impossible permutations. Despite boasting a strong squad on paper, Delhi continue to look unsettled, with constant chopping and changing hurting their balance. Their decision to move away from proven match-winners has only added to the frustration in a season rapidly slipping away.
