Liverpool Forward Diogo Jota Dies in Car Crash, 10 Days After Wedding.
Liverpool and Portugal forward Diogo Jota has tragically died in a car accident in Spain at the age of 28, just days after marrying his long-time partner. The fatal crash occurred on July 3 on the A-52 highway near Palacios de Sanabria in Spain’s Zamora region.
Jota’s younger brother, Andre Filipe, a 26-year-old professional footballer, also lost his life in the accident. According to initial reports, the brothers were traveling in a Lamborghini when a tyre blowout caused the vehicle to veer off the road during an overtaking maneuver. The car subsequently caught fire, killing both men at the scene. The blaze also ignited nearby vegetation, prompting an emergency response from regional fire services.
The accident occurred just ten days after Jota’s wedding to Rute Cardoso, held on June 22 in Porto. The couple celebrated their marriage surrounded by family and their three young children.
A Promising Career Cut Short
Jota began his professional career with Paços de Ferreira in Portugal before moving to Atlético Madrid in 2016. He later made a name for himself in the Premier League with Wolverhampton Wanderers, before joining Liverpool FC, where he became a fan favorite for his consistent performances and clutch goals.
During his time at Liverpool, Jota won both the FA Cup and Carabao Cup under Jürgen Klopp, and most recently lifted the Premier League trophy in the 2024–25 season under new manager Arne Slot.
Internationally, Jota represented Portugal at Euro 2024 and played a crucial role in their victory at the UEFA Nations League earlier this year, featuring in extra time during the final against Spain.
