Lovlina Borgohain celebrated her 29th birthday in the best possible way, winning her maiden Asian Games gold medal in the women’s 75kg boxing category with a dominant performance.

The Indian boxer defeated China’s Ziyi Bao by unanimous decision in the gold-medal bout, completing a memorable campaign. With the victory, Lovlina became the first Indian woman boxer since Mary Kom in 2014 to win an Asian Games gold medal.

Lovlina had already created history by becoming the first Indian woman boxer to reach consecutive Asian Games finals. After settling for silver at the Hangzhou Asian Games, she was determined to change the colour of her medal this time and made a confident start to the final.

HOW THE FIGHT UNFOLDED

Lovlina enjoyed an advantage in height and reach and was the more aggressive boxer early on. She connected with a few punches to Bao’s face before attempting to tie her opponent up in a clinch.

Bao entered the bout with an unbeaten amateur record and a 14-fight winning streak. She gradually found her rhythm, landing several heavy punches to Lovlina’s body and closing the distance.

The Chinese boxer began finding more openings as the round progressed, forcing Lovlina onto the defensive. However, the Indian did enough to edge the opening round, with three of the five judges scoring it in her favour.

Bao came out more aggressively in the second round, throwing combinations and looking to keep Lovlina under pressure. The Indian relied more on her jab and hooks, while Bao continued to press forward.

A well-placed jab from Bao pushed Lovlina towards the ropes, prompting the Indian to clinch once again. Lovlina responded with some clean punches late in the round, impressing the judges. She was awarded the second round by a 4-1 margin.

With the gold within reach, Lovlina adopted a more defensive approach in the final round. Bao became increasingly desperate and attempted to land heavier punches, but Lovlina remained composed and avoided taking unnecessary risks.

By the time the result was announced, victory appeared almost certain. The Indian contingent erupted in celebration as Lovlina was declared the winner, with the boxer turning towards her corner and celebrating her long-awaited Asian Games gold on her birthday.
