7.0-Magnitude Earthquake Hits Russia’s Kamchatka Peninsula, No Immediate Damage Reports
A magnitude 7.0 earthquake struck Russia’s Kamchatka Peninsula region on Friday, October 16, according to the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), Reuters reported.
The earthquake occurred at a depth of 140 kilometres (86.99 miles), the seismological centre said. No immediate information was available regarding casualties, damage to buildings or disruptions caused by the tremor.
Kamchatka Lies in an Active Seismic Zone
Located in Russia’s Far East, the Kamchatka Peninsula lies along the Pacific Ring of Fire, one of the world’s most seismically active regions. The area frequently experiences earthquakes due to the movement of tectonic plates and has been struck by powerful tremors in the past.
In September 2025, a magnitude 7.8 earthquake struck off the coast of the peninsula, shaking buildings and prompting authorities to issue a tsunami alert. The warning was subsequently lifted after officials determined that the threat had passed, AFP reported.
The United States Geological Survey (USGS) located that earlier earthquake approximately 128 kilometres (80 miles) east of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, the regional capital, at a depth of around 10 kilometres (six miles).
Russia’s state geophysical service estimated the earlier tremor’s magnitude at 7.4 and reported at least five aftershocks.
Tsunami Alert Issued Following Earlier Earthquake
Following the September 2025 earthquake, the US Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre issued an alert warning of potentially hazardous waves along nearby coastlines. The centre later announced that the tsunami threat had passed, AFP reported.
Vladimir Solodov, who was Kamchatka’s governor at the time, said the earthquake had once again tested the resilience of local residents. He reported no damage at that stage and urged people to remain calm.
Authorities had not immediately released details about the impact of Friday’s latest earthquake. Further assessments would be needed to establish whether the tremor caused damage or prompted any emergency measures.
