MS Dhoni Inducted into ICC Hall of Fame: Becomes 11th Indian to Receive the Honour

Legendary cricketer MS Dhoni has been named as the latest inductee into the ICC Hall of Fame, becoming the 11th Indian cricketer to receive this prestigious honour. The International Cricket Council (ICC) announced the development on June 9, just weeks before Dhoni’s 44th birthday on July 7.

This recognition comes nearly five years after Dhoni’s retirement from international cricket. He played his final match for India in the semi-final of the 2019 ICC Cricket World Cup. Following India’s exit from the tournament, Dhoni stepped away from international cricket, officially announcing his retirement on August 15, 2020.

A Glorious Career
Mahendra Singh Dhoni, affectionately known as “Captain Cool,” is widely regarded as one of the most successful and influential cricketers in Indian history. Born on July 7, 1981, in Ranchi, Jharkhand, Dhoni burst onto the international scene in 2004 with an ODI debut against Bangladesh. Just a few matches later, he made headlines with a blistering 148 against Pakistan.

Dhoni became captain of India’s ODI team in 2007 and took over the Test captaincy in 2008. Under his leadership, India achieved historic success, winning:

  • 2007 ICC World Twenty20
  • 2011 ICC Cricket World Cup
  • 2013 ICC Champions Trophy

He remains the only captain in history to win all three major ICC limited-overs trophies. Dhoni also led India to Asia Cup triumphs in 2010 and 2016.

Individually, Dhoni was a trailblazer. He was the first Indian wicket-keeper to score 4,000 Test runs and ended his ODI career with 10,773 runs at an outstanding average of 50.57, including 10 centuries and 73 fifties. His calm under pressure and finishing abilities became hallmarks of his game.
