Actor and self-proclaimed critic Kamaal R. Khan (KRK), who was arrested in connection with a firing incident in Mumbai’s Oshiwara area, has been granted bail on a personal bond of ₹25,000.

KRK’s lawyer, Sana Raees Khan, argued that his arrest was illegal and arbitrary. She claimed that mandatory notice under Section 35(3) of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, 2023, was never served before the arrest. Additionally, she contended that KRK was not informed of the specific grounds of arrest, either orally or in writing, in violation of Article 22(1) of the Constitution and Section 47 of the BNSS, rendering the arrest invalid.

KRK has maintained that his outspoken criticism of films, production houses, and actors has made him a target within the Hindi film industry. “There was no intention to harm anyone. I have a license, and I am a businessman. I have lived in Mumbai for many years. There is no chance of me running away,” KRK’s lawyer quoted him as saying.

The firing incident, which took place on January 18, 2026, involved two rounds hitting the Nalanda Society building in Oshiwara, with marks observed on the second and fourth floors. Fortunately, no injuries were reported. Police investigations noted that the distance between the two targeted buildings was around 400 meters, while the weapon’s range is 20 meters.

KRK reportedly admitted during questioning at Oshiwara police station that he discharged his licensed firearm while cleaning and testing it, aiming at a nearby mangrove area. Strong winds, he claimed, caused the bullets to deviate and hit the residential building.

Earlier, a Bandra court had sent KRK to police custody until January 27. Police have confirmed that one cartridge was recovered from the scene, but the motive behind the firing remains unclear. Initial CCTV footage did not yield any leads, though forensic analysis suggested the shots may have been fired from KRK’s nearby bungalow.
