Mumbai Indians head coach Mahela Jayawardene has thrown his support behind Suryakumar Yadav, insisting the team continues to back their senior batter despite his lean run in IPL 2026.
With a crucial clash against Chennai Super Kings coming up, Jayawardene made it clear that the dressing room remains confident the batter will rediscover his form.
Suryakumar’s recent struggles have come under scrutiny as Mumbai Indians look to revive a difficult season. Addressing concerns at the pre-match press conference, Jayawardene stressed that performances in training and intent in matches remain encouraging, even if results have not gone his way.
“I mean, he just won the World Cup as captain and was the Player of the Tournament last year. So what more can you say? We’ve had conversations about him. If you look at his batting in the nets, he practises as well as anyone. Even in matches, he’s hitting the ball well. But the way he’s gotten out a few times has been unfortunate. Sometimes he’s hit a shot and been caught at the boundary, and at other times he’s just faced a couple of good balls,” Jayawardene said.
“We just keep encouraging him. If you look at Surya, he’s had three or four brilliant years, not just last season. Players are human, and sometimes they go through a phase where things don’t go their way. He understands that, and he’ll come back with a smile and play the way he knows best,” he added.
Mumbai Indians head into the CSK fixture placed ninth on the table with just two wins from eight matches, making the contest a must-win to stay in contention.
Suryakumar Yadav’s form under the scanner
Suryakumar’s numbers this season reflect his dip in output. In eight innings, he has scored 162 runs at an average of 20.25 and a strike rate of 140.87 — modest returns by his standards in the middle order.
His recent sequence has also lacked consistency, with scores of 6, 33, 0, 15, 36 and 5 highlighting his struggles to convert starts into substantial innings.
His latest outing against Sunrisers Hyderabad summed up the trend. After a strong platform set by Ryan Rickelton, Suryakumar managed just 5 off 5 balls before falling to Eshan Malinga, halting Mumbai’s momentum in the middle overs.
Can Suryakumar respond against CSK?
The upcoming clash against Chennai Super Kings now carries added significance for both Mumbai Indians and Suryakumar Yadav. Having lost the earlier meeting at Chepauk, MI are under pressure to respond, and their middle-order stability will be crucial.
With the tournament entering its decisive phase, Mumbai will be hoping their experienced match-winners, especially Suryakumar, can step up at the right time.
