After a phase marked by underwhelming box-office outings such as Custody and Thank You, actor Naga Chaitanya has staged a strong career comeback with Thandel, which has emerged as a major turning point for him.
The film delivered a significant milestone by becoming Chaitanya’s first ₹100-crore grosser, cementing 2025 as one of the most successful years of his career. The resurgence follows the positive response to his OTT debut Dhootha in 2023, with both projects contributing to a decisive shift in his professional trajectory.
Reflecting on the phase, Chaitanya described 2025 as a “significant year” for him. Thandel not only crossed ₹100 crore at the global box office, but its OTT release also generated considerable buzz after Netflix acquired the film for a reported ₹40 crore — the highest digital deal of Chaitanya’s career.
Speaking to HT about the impact of Thandel and Dhootha, the actor said, “Thandel in theatres and Dhootha on streaming marked a meaningful shift in my career.”

Directed by —, Thandel released in theatres on February 7 and features Naga Chaitanya in the lead role alongside Sai Pallavi, Aadukalam Naren, Divya Pillai, Karunakaran, Kalpa Latha and Babloo Prithiveeraj. The film is currently streaming on Netflix.
The story revolves around Raju, a fearless fisherman who inadvertently crosses into Pakistani waters along with fellow villagers. His struggle to balance his love for fishing and his relationship with Bujji Thalli, played by Sai Pallavi, forms the emotional core of the film. Thandel is inspired by real-life events.
What’s next for Naga Chaitanya
On the work front, Chaitanya will next be seen in the tentatively titled NC24, reportedly one of the highest-budget projects of his career. The film is expected to present him in a completely new avatar, setting it apart from his previous roles.
The project is directed by Karthik Varma Dandu (Virupaksha, Kartikeya), with Sukumar writing the story. It is being produced by BVSN Prasad, Sukumar and Bapineedu.
Personal life
Naga Chaitanya married actor Sobhita Dhulipala in a traditional Telugu wedding ceremony on December 4, 2024, at Annapurna Studios in Hyderabad. Following their wedding, the couple made their first public appearance together during a visit to the Srisailam Temple in Andhra Pradesh.
