Nepal Floods: 108 Indians Rescued, 275 Still Missing As India Steps Up Relief Efforts

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) on Saturday said 108 Indian nationals have been rescued from flood-hit Nepal, while contact has been re-established with 50 others who were previously untraceable.

However, more than 275 Indian nationals and 128 people of Indian origin are still reported missing, according to the MEA.

In a statement, the ministry also said 598 Indian nationals had safely crossed into Nepal from China over the past two days. Around 900 Indians currently stranded in China are safe and remain in contact with the authorities.

The developments come as rescue and relief operations continue in parts of Nepal and Tibet following a glacial collapse that triggered a massive surge of water, ice, rocks and debris through the Himalayan region. At least 675 deaths have been reported, while nearly 3,000 people are still missing across Nepal and Tibet.

India Coordinates Rescue Efforts With Nepal, China

The MEA said India is working closely with the governments of Nepal and China to coordinate search, rescue and relief operations and assist Indians affected by the disaster.

A round-the-clock control room has been established at the MEA, while 24-hour helplines are operating at Indian embassies in Kathmandu and Beijing.

India’s missions in both countries are coordinating with local authorities and other stakeholders to track missing nationals, facilitate rescue operations and ensure the safety of those who have been evacuated.

The Indian missions are also assisting rescued nationals with their onward travel and return to India.

The MEA said it is continuing to monitor the situation and facilitate the transit of Indian nationals returning from the Kailash Manasarovar Yatra through Nepal.

Authorities remain in close contact with the affected Indians and are continuing efforts to locate those who are still unaccounted for.
