Noida Dowry Murder Accused Shot in Leg During Escape Attempt.
In a dramatic turn of events, Vipin Bhati, the man accused of setting his wife Nikki on fire over a dowry demand in Greater Noida, was shot in the leg by Uttar Pradesh Police while attempting to escape custody, officials said on Sunday.
The 28-year-old woman had allegedly been killed on Thursday over a Rs 36 lakh dowry demand. Videos of the assault circulated online, shocking the city. Vipin was arrested on Saturday.
Police said the accused tried to snatch an officer’s pistol and flee. “We had come to recover the bottles of inflammable liquid he used to set her on fire. When surrounded, he tried to fire at the police. In self-defence, we fired and the bullet hit his leg. He is now in hospital,” ADCP Sudhir Kumar told ANI. The bottles of thinner used in the crime were recovered.
Victim’s Father Demands Severe Action
Nikki’s father, Bhikari Singh Payla, had earlier urged Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath to ensure Vipin was shot dead for killing his daughter. “They are killers and should be shot. My daughter was raising her son by running a parlour. They tortured her. The whole family conspired to kill her,” he told NDTV.
Payla said he had met all of Vipin’s demands, including a Scorpio SUV and a Royal Enfield Bullet bike, yet the abuse continued. “They tortured my daughters despite all gifts and payments. Why should petty thieves be shot in the leg while murderers go unpunished?” he added.
Horrific Incident
Nikki and her elder sister Kanchan, married into the same family, had been repeatedly tortured. On Thursday, Vipin allegedly assaulted Nikki in front of Kanchan and set her ablaze. She succumbed while being transferred from a private hospital in Noida to Safdarjung Hospital in Delhi.
Kanchan recounted the ordeal: “They kept demanding Rs 36 lakh. That night, they assaulted my sister in front of me and the children, poured liquid on her, and set her on fire. I tried to save her but could not.”
Nikki’s minor son witnessed the horrifying attack. “They poured something on mumma, slapped her, and set her ablaze with a lighter,” he said.
