Petrol, diesel prices hiked again across India as fuel costs continue to rise

Petrol and diesel prices were raised across India again on Saturday, marking the third increase this month as state-run oil companies continue to respond to rising global crude prices and geopolitical tensions in West Asia.

In Delhi, petrol prices rose by 87 paise per litre to Rs 99.51 from Rs 98.64, while diesel climbed by 91 paise to Rs 92.49 per litre from Rs 91.58.

The latest revision comes a day after the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas assured the public that the country has sufficient petrol and diesel stocks despite speculation over supply concerns. The ministry also urged responsible consumption and public cooperation to ensure smooth fuel availability during a period of elevated demand.

The increase follows a substantial revision on May 16, when state-owned oil marketing companies raised petrol and diesel prices by nearly Rs 3 per litre in several cities.

Updated fuel prices in major cities are as follows:

  • Delhi — Petrol: Rs 99.51 (+0.87), Diesel: Rs 92.49 (+0.91)
  • Kolkata — Petrol: Rs 110.64 (+0.87), Diesel: Rs 97.02 (+0.91)
  • Mumbai — Petrol: Rs 108.49 (+0.87), Diesel: Rs 95.02 (+0.91)
  • Chennai — Petrol: Rs 105.31 (+0.87), Diesel: Rs 96.98 (+0.91)
  • Gurugram — Petrol: Rs 100.38 (+0.87), Diesel: Rs 92.92 (+0.91)
  • Noida — Petrol: Rs 98.78 (+0.87), Diesel: Rs 93.12 (+0.91)

The fresh rise is expected to add pressure on commuters, transport operators and businesses, with economists warning that continued increases in fuel costs can push up transportation and logistics expenses, eventually affecting prices of essential goods and food.

Government officials, however, said the revisions are necessary to manage increasing import costs and maintain fuel supply stability amid volatility in global energy markets.

India imports nearly 85% of its crude oil needs, making domestic fuel prices highly sensitive to international developments. Concerns surrounding possible disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz — one of the world’s most important oil transit corridors — have intensified fears over supply disruptions.

Natural gas prices have also moved upward. Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) prices in Delhi have increased by Re 1 per kilogram, with Indraprastha Gas Limited (IGL) now selling CNG at Rs 81.09 per kg in the national capital, adding to broader concerns over inflation and rising household expenses.
