PM Modi to Skip UNGA; S. Jaishankar Likely to Represent India.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi will not address the General Debate at the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) later this month, according to a revised provisional list of speakers. India is now expected to be represented by a minister, with External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar scheduled to speak on September 27.
The high-level General Debate will run from September 23–29, with Brazil traditionally speaking first, followed by the United States. US President Donald Trump is set to address world leaders on September 23, marking his first UNGA speech of his second term.
Previously, PM Modi was scheduled to speak on September 26, alongside leaders from Israel, China, Pakistan, and Bangladesh. The change comes amid PM Modi’s prior visit to the US in February, during which he met President Trump at the White House.
The UNGA session, considered the “busiest diplomatic season” of the year, opens on September 9. This year’s theme is “Better together: 80 years and more for peace, development and human rights,” against the backdrop of the ongoing Israel-Hamas conflict and the Ukraine war.
Key events include:
-
September 22: Commemoration of the 80th anniversary of the UN.
-
September 24: Climate Summit hosted by UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres.
-
High-level meetings on sustainable economy, noncommunicable diseases, youth programs, AI governance, nuclear disarmament, and the Rohingya crisis.
-
A high-level meeting marking the 30th anniversary of the Fourth World Conference on Women, focusing on gender equality and empowerment.
