Amarinder Singh Raja Warring has resigned as Punjab Congress president, ending his more than four-year tenure as the head of the party’s state unit.
Warring submitted his resignation after the Congress high command conveyed its decision to replace him, according to party sources. The party is expected to announce his successor within the next 24 to 48 hours.
The leadership change comes months ahead of the 2027 Punjab Assembly elections and follows prolonged differences within the state Congress. Former minister Vijay Inder Singla is among the leading names being considered, while Jalandhar Cantonment MLA Pargat Singh and Gurdaspur MP Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa are also in contention. Former Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi and other senior leaders have also figured in discussions.
WHY DID RAJA WARRING RESIGN?
Warring’s resignation follows months of reported factional differences within the Punjab Congress, particularly between his camp and leaders associated with Channi.
The party had attempted to balance the competing factions by retaining Warring as state president while giving Channi a key role in the campaign committee. The arrangement did not end the differences within the state unit.
The leadership issue gained fresh momentum after Sachin Pilot took charge as the Congress’s Punjab in-charge. Pilot held meetings with party leaders and workers and submitted a report to the high command on the functioning of the state organisation and internal differences, according to party sources. Senior Congress leaders subsequently discussed the Punjab situation.
The high command later conveyed to Warring that it wanted a change in the state leadership, following which he offered his resignation.
WHO COULD REPLACE WARRING?
Vijay Inder Singla has emerged as one of the leading contenders for the post. The former minister and MP is a member of the Congress Working Committee and was given responsibility for the party’s election management and coordination committee earlier this year.
Pargat Singh and Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa are also among the names being considered. Other names discussed include Sukhbinder Singh Sarkaria, Charanjit Singh Channi and Gurjit Singh Aujla. The final decision has not been formally announced.
The leadership change comes as the Congress prepares for the 2027 Punjab Assembly elections and seeks to reorganise its state unit ahead of the polls.
FACTIONALISM HAS LONG DOGGED PUNJAB CONGRESS
The latest change follows a history of internal leadership disputes in the Punjab Congress.
In 2021, months before the Assembly elections, the party removed Amarinder Singh as chief minister after a prolonged dispute involving the state leadership and Navjot Singh Sidhu. Charanjit Singh Channi subsequently became chief minister.
The Congress won 18 of Punjab’s 117 Assembly seats in the 2022 elections, compared with 77 seats in 2017. Warring took charge as Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee president in April 2022, shortly after the party’s defeat.
With Warring’s resignation, the Congress now faces another leadership transition in Punjab, with the successor expected to be announced shortly.
