Rahul-Priyanka’s Surprise Move Steals Spotlight at INDIA March; Allies Raise Concerns

The INDIA bloc’s joint protest against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar took an unexpected turn on Tuesday.

When Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra entered Akashvani Bhavan and staged a prolonged sit-in. While Congress leaders described the move as spontaneous, some allies felt the joint Opposition demonstration was gradually overshadowed by the Gandhi siblings.

The protest had begun as a coordinated march by Opposition MPs from Parliament towards the Election Commission headquarters, with the INDIA bloc demanding Gyanesh Kumar’s resignation over its allegations concerning the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls.

As the march approached the Election Commission, Delhi Police erected barricades and detained several Opposition leaders, including Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav. Many of the MPs were taken away in buses to different police stations.

Rahul and Priyanka, however, remained behind. The two eventually made their way into the Akashvani Bhavan complex, which is located next to the Election Commission office, and began a sit-in with several Congress leaders.

How the Surprise Move Happened

According to Congress sources, the entry into Akashvani Bhavan was not part of the original plan. Rahul Gandhi had reportedly intended to enter the complex and leave through a rear gate that leads towards the Election Commission.

When that gate was locked, the Gandhi siblings and Congress leaders including KC Venugopal, Pawan Khera and Imran Pratapgarhi stayed back and began protesting at the premises, demanding a meeting with the Election Commission.

The move caught both the police and some Congress leaders off guard. Congress leaders later credited the siblings with keeping the demonstration going after other Opposition MPs had been detained.

The sit-in continued for several hours before Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi and other Congress leaders were detained by Delhi Police. They were later released. A police case has also been registered in connection with the episode.

Why INDIA Bloc Allies Are Unhappy

The dramatic turn of events, however, has exposed differences within the Opposition alliance.

Some INDIA bloc leaders felt that a collective protest was transformed into a Congress-centric demonstration after most alliance leaders had been detained while the Gandhi siblings continued their sit-in.

According to sources cited by The Indian Express, KC Venugopal subsequently reached out to alliance partners and acknowledged that the Congress leadership had acted in the moment. He also expressed regret over the “mistrust” caused by the allies not being kept informed about the move.

Some Opposition leaders also questioned the decision to seek a meeting with the Election Commission. Their argument was that the INDIA bloc was demanding the CEC’s resignation, making a meeting with the poll panel a strategy that should have been discussed collectively beforehand. A Left MP told The Indian Express that the allies would not have agreed to such a move had it been discussed with them in advance.

Not the First Time Allies Have Been Kept Out

The latest disagreement is not the first instance in which Congress allies have expressed concerns over protest strategy.

During the Monsoon Session of Parliament, Congress had similarly not initially informed its INDIA bloc partners about Rahul Gandhi’s plan to stage a protest outside Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s residence, seeking the resignation of then Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan over the paper-leak issue.

Congress leaders subsequently reached out to alliance partners, following which leaders including Akhilesh Yadav and Supriya Sule joined Rahul Gandhi at the demonstration.

Congress Moves to Reassure Partners

With the latest protest reviving concerns over coordination within the INDIA bloc, Congress leadership has moved to engage its allies.

Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge is also scheduled to host an informal lunch for INDIA bloc MPs in Delhi, as the Opposition seeks to maintain coordination following Tuesday’s confrontation.

The episode has thus produced two parallel outcomes: the Gandhi siblings’ unexpected move kept the protest alive for several more hours, but it also triggered questions among alliance partners over how far Congress can act independently during demonstrations presented as joint INDIA bloc programmes.
