Rajnath Singh on India’s Response to US 50% Tariffs: ‘Those Who Are Big-Hearted Don’t React Immediately’
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh explained India’s measured silence in response to the Trump administration’s criticism over Delhi’s purchase of Russian oil and funding of Moscow’s war, which prompted steep US tariffs exceeding 50% on Indian exports.
Addressing the Indian trading community in Morocco, Singh said, “Those who are broad-minded and big-hearted refrain from reacting. We didn’t react. Those who are broad-minded and big-hearted do not respond immediately to anything.”
The Indian government has called the tariffs “unfair and unreasonable,” noting that they aim to make Indian exports less competitive. Singh described them as protectionist measures attempting to undermine India’s economic rise.
He reiterated India’s confidence in its growth, stating, “No one can stop India from becoming a superpower,” while taking a subtle dig at Trump, calling him a “sabka boss” unable to digest India’s progress.
Highlighting strides under the ‘Make in India’ initiative, Singh emphasized India’s growing self-reliance in defence production and exports. At the foundation-laying of Bharat Earth Movers Limited’s new rail hub in Madhya Pradesh, he noted, “Today, we are not only manufacturing on Indian soil but also exporting to other countries. This is the new defence sector of the new India.”
Singh’s remarks reflect India’s diplomatic restraint while confidently asserting its economic and industrial ambitions amid global trade pressures.
