Ranbir Kapoor’s Ramayana To Get A Shorter China Version, 33 Minutes Cut

Ranbir Kapoor’s much-awaited Ramayana is set to arrive in theatres in different versions, with the China release reportedly being 33 minutes shorter than the Indian cut.

According to a report citing a source familiar with the project, the China version is being tailored to meet the country’s strict content and censorship requirements. As the film is based on the ancient Indian epic and contains several devotional elements, certain portions may require changes before it can secure clearance for release.

Why Will the China Version Be Different?

China’s film regulations place restrictions on content involving religious themes, superstition and material considered inconsistent with state policies. Since Ramayana is deeply rooted in Indian mythology and spirituality, the filmmakers are reportedly preparing a modified version for the Chinese market.

The film is expected to be released in China under the title Ramayana: The Legend of the Prince. Its release could also mark an important opportunity for Hindi cinema to rebuild its audience in the country.

Indian films previously enjoyed considerable popularity in China, with movies such as PK, Dangal, Secret Superstar and Andhadhun performing well there. However, the release of Hindi films in the market was disrupted following the India-China tensions after the 2020 Galwan Valley clash.

What Is Ranbir Kapoor’s Ramayana About?

Directed by Nitesh Tiwari, Ramayana features Ranbir Kapoor as Lord Ram, Sai Pallavi as Sita, Ravi Dubey as Lakshman and Yash as Ravana.

The recently released trailer introduces Ravana as a powerful ruler who unleashes destruction across the three worlds. Lord Vishnu subsequently takes the avatar of Ram to restore balance and protect humanity.

The story follows Ram’s journey from his early years and marriage to Sita to his 14-year exile. Sita and Lakshman accompany him into the forest, eventually leading to Sita’s abduction by Ravana and the massive battle between the forces of good and evil.

Ramayana is planned as a two-part epic. The first instalment is scheduled to release on Diwali 2026, while the second part is slated to arrive on Diwali 2027.
