Ranvir Shorey Criticises CJP’s Street Protests, Says Democracy Must Be Defended Through Parliament, Ballots and Courts

Actor Ranvir Shorey has criticised the Cockroach Janta Party’s (CJP) ongoing protests, urging the group to pursue its demands through Parliament, elections and the judiciary rather than taking to the streets.

On Sunday, Shorey took to X, formerly Twitter, and shared a video featuring CJP chief spokesperson Saurav Das. In the clip, Das can be heard asserting that the party, its workers and protesters would not back down from their demands and appealing to citizens to join the street demonstrations.

Reacting to the video, Shorey wrote, “Show your numbers in Parliament and the ballot, not the streets! And if the way to those seems unjust, show the courts.”

He added, “That is the democratic way! Hijacking the streets and holding the public infrastructure and law and order machinery to ransom is the actual ‘murder of democracy’.”

CJP Intensifies Protest Against Election Commission

The youth-led pressure group CJP has intensified its agitation, demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. The protests in Delhi entered their second day on October 11, 2026, with the group opposing the Election Commission’s Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.

The CJP has alleged that the voter-list revision exercise has disenfranchised millions of people. The Election Commission and the BJP have rejected allegations of electoral manipulation.

On October 10, CJP founder Abhijeet Dipke and fellow leaders Saurav Das and Ashutosh Ranka were detained after arriving in Delhi for a planned demonstration at Jantar Mantar. Several other protesters were also detained as authorities imposed extensive security restrictions.

The three leaders were released on October 11, reportedly with conditions related to maintaining public peace for one year. Following his release, Dipke vowed to continue the agitation.

Alongside its demand for Kumar’s resignation, the CJP has called for electoral reforms and an independent inquiry into alleged irregularities in the revision of voter lists.

Supreme Court Addresses Protest-Related Concerns

During a special hearing on Sunday, the Supreme Court observed that protesters would not be detained and that public transport services would return to normal.

The demonstrations have drawn attention to the wider dispute over the SIR exercise, with the CJP pressing for accountability and reforms while the Election Commission maintains its position on the electoral revision process.
