Stock Market Today: Sensex, Nifty Open Lower as IT Shares Gain; India VIX Jumps Over 3%

Indian equity benchmarks began Wednesday’s trading session, October 14, on a subdued note as gains in information technology stocks failed to offset losses across banking, metal and healthcare sectors. Investors remained cautious amid mixed market signals and rising volatility.

The Nifty 50 opened marginally lower at 22,715.75, against its previous close of 22,721.95. Meanwhile, the BSE Sensex stood at 72,976.88 at 9:16 am, declining 56.90 points, or 0.08%.

Broader Markets Trade in the Red

Weakness extended to broader market indices during early trade. The Nifty Midcap 100 fell 0.27%, while the Nifty Midcap 150 declined 0.25%. The Nifty Smallcap 50 slipped 0.31%, and the Nifty Smallcap 250 edged down 0.05%.

Market participants remained watchful as they assessed sector-specific movements and the potential for further fluctuations. The India VIX, which measures expected market volatility, climbed 3.09% to 14.56, indicating increased expectations of near-term swings.

IT Stocks Lead Sectoral Gains

Information technology shares emerged as the strongest performers in early trading, lifting the Nifty IT index by 1.27%.

The Nifty FMCG index advanced 0.35%, while the Nifty Media index gained 0.27%. The Nifty Private Bank and Nifty Auto indices also traded marginally higher, rising 0.07% and 0.01%, respectively.

However, several sectors remained under selling pressure. The Nifty PSU Bank index dropped 0.65%, while the Nifty Financial Services ex-Bank index declined 0.64%. The Nifty Healthcare and Nifty Pharma indices fell 0.53% and 0.52%, respectively, while the Nifty Metal index lost 0.47%.

The Nifty Consumer Durables index slipped 0.48%, the Nifty Realty index declined 0.34%, and the Nifty Financial Services 25/50 index fell 0.37%.

TCS, HCL Tech and Infosys Support the Market

Among Sensex constituents, gains in heavyweight technology stocks provided some support to the benchmark indices.

Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) rose 2.06%, making it one of the notable gainers in early trade. HCL Technologies advanced 1.44%, Infosys gained 1.14%, and Tech Mahindra climbed 0.68%. Kotak Mahindra Bank and Bharat Electronics also traded in positive territory.

Bajaj Finance, L&T Among Key Losers

On the downside, several heavyweight stocks weighed on market sentiment. Bajaj Finance fell 0.95%, while Eternal declined 0.93%. Larsen & Toubro dropped 0.79%, and Power Grid Corporation slipped 0.76%.

Sun Pharmaceutical Industries also traded lower, losing 0.66%. Other notable laggards included Adani Ports, Tata Steel, ICICI Bank, Bharti Airtel and Titan.

With IT shares providing limited support while several other sectors remained weak, domestic markets started the session cautiously. The rise in India VIX further highlighted investors’ expectations of increased volatility in the near term.
