Sheikh Hasina Aide Alleges “Clinton-Yunus” Nexus, Accuses USAID of Funding 2024 Bangladesh Unrest.
A top aide of former Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has claimed that a US humanitarian agency and the Clinton family played a role in the 2024 uprising that led to Hasina’s ouster. In an interview with Russia Today, Mohibul Hasan Chowdhury, a former minister in Hasina’s cabinet, alleged a nexus between USAID and the interim government led by Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus.
Chowdhury accused certain NGOs, including USAID and the International Republican Institute, of running campaigns against Hasina’s government since 2018. “They were hell-bent on changing the government in Bangladesh,” he said, claiming that the unrest was “carefully planned” and funded to serve Western interests.
He also pointed to a longstanding relationship between the Clinton family and the Yunus regime, asserting that clandestine funding of NGOs was part of a long-term effort to facilitate regime change. “The chaos was carefully planned with this money, and it turned into a big riot,” Chowdhury said, raising questions about the allocation of millions of dollars in USAID funds.
The former aide’s allegations come after Hasina fled Bangladesh on August 5, 2024, hours before a mob attacked her residence amid weeks of student-led protests over job quotas. The unrest left at least 700 people dead, with reports of violence against Hindu minorities.
Hasina had previously accused Yunus of “selling the nation to the US,” referencing disputes over St Martin’s Island. Following her removal, the Yunus-led interim government shifted Bangladesh’s foreign policy closer to Pakistan, a nation historically linked to the 1971 genocide in Bangladesh.
The US government has dismissed these claims, calling allegations of involvement in Bangladesh’s crisis “laughable.”
