Former Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Saturday congratulated Suvendu Adhikari after he took oath as the new Chief Minister of West Bengal following the BJP’s historic victory in the Assembly elections.

The message was shared by the Bangladesh Awami League on X, where the party posted details of Hasina’s congratulatory letter addressed to Adhikari.

According to the statement, Hasina wished the newly sworn-in chief minister and his cabinet colleagues good health and success in office. She also expressed hope that West Bengal would witness faster development under Adhikari’s leadership and that the longstanding ties of friendship and cooperation between India and Bangladesh would grow stronger.

“She also wished continued prosperity and well-being for all elected representatives and the people of West Bengal,” the statement added.

Adhikari, who emerged as the face of the BJP’s campaign in Bengal, scripted a major political upset by defeating Mamata Banerjee in Bhabanipur and leading the Bharatiya Janata Party to power in the state for the first time.

Several BJP leaders, including Dilip Ghosh, Agnimitra Paul and Nishit Pramanik, were sworn in as ministers during the ceremony held at Brigade Parade Ground.

The swearing-in ceremony coincided with the birth anniversary of Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore.

In the 2026 West Bengal Assembly elections, the BJP secured a sweeping mandate by winning 207 seats in the 294-member Assembly, bringing an end to the All India Trinamool Congress’s 15-year rule in the state.
