Punjab Kings finally hit pause on their nightmare run in IPL 2026, grinding out a must-win victory over Lucknow Super Giants to keep their playoff hopes alive.
After suffering six consecutive defeats, Shreyas Iyer’s side rediscovered its fighting spirit at the perfect moment, staying in contention for the final remaining playoff spot.
With Royal Challengers Bengaluru, Gujarat Titans and SunRisers Hyderabad already through to the playoffs on 18 points each, the battle for the fourth spot has narrowed down to Punjab Kings, Rajasthan Royals and Kolkata Knight Riders. Punjab finished their league campaign with 15 points from 14 matches and now need other results to go their way.
The victory also ended Delhi Capitals’ slim hopes of qualification. Stuck on 12 points with one game left, Delhi can no longer mathematically enter the top four.
Shreyas Leads From the Front
On a night loaded with pressure, Punjab captain Shreyas Iyer produced the kind of innings leaders are remembered for. Battling both poor form and mounting pressure around the team, Shreyas stepped up when Punjab needed him most.
His impact began with his captaincy. After Arshdeep Singh endured a rough outing with the ball early on, leaking heavily in the powerplay, Shreyas constantly shuffled his bowling options to regain control of the innings and prevent Lucknow from crossing the 200-run mark.
Chasing 197 on a slightly slow Ekana surface, Punjab once again stumbled early. Priyansh Arya fell for a golden duck, while Prabhsimran Singh struggled to find rhythm in the opening overs. With the innings threatening to derail, Shreyas absorbed the pressure and rebuilt the chase patiently.
Initially cautious, the Punjab skipper focused on rotating strike and stabilising the innings before accelerating later in the chase. Once conditions improved under lights, Prabhsimran began attacking freely and brought up a quick half-century, easing some pressure off his captain.
But the night ultimately belonged to Shreyas.
Maiden IPL Century Under Pressure
The Punjab captain exploded in the closing overs, launching boundaries with authority and confidence. Batting in the nervous nineties with victory within touching distance, Shreyas backed himself to finish the chase emphatically.
On 95 in the 18th over, he smashed Mohsin Khan over cow corner for a towering six to seal both the match and his maiden IPL century in unforgettable fashion.
It was not just a personal milestone. It was an innings that rescued Punjab’s season.
Bowlers Keep Punjab Alive
Earlier in the evening, Punjab’s bowlers had fought hard to stay in the contest despite a difficult start. Arshdeep Singh conceded 16 runs in the opening over before Azmatullah Omarzai and Marco Jansen dragged the momentum back with early wickets.
Omarzai dismissed Arshin Kulkarni immediately, while Jansen removed Nicholas Pooran soon after to put Lucknow under pressure.
Ayush Badoni then counterattacked brilliantly with a rapid 43 off 18 balls, briefly swinging momentum back towards Lucknow. However, Yuzvendra Chahal once again proved decisive on a surface offering some grip, dismissing Badoni with sharp work from Prabhsimran Singh behind the stumps.
Josh Inglis later threatened to take Lucknow beyond 220 with a fluent 72 off 43 balls before Shashank Singh produced a timely breakthrough in the death overs.
Although Arshdeep leaked runs again in the final over, Punjab still managed to restrict Lucknow to a chaseable total.
Playoff Equation Still Open
Punjab’s fate now depends on Rajasthan Royals’ clash against Mumbai Indians. A Rajasthan victory would directly seal the final playoff berth.
But if Rajasthan lose, Punjab Kings will get one final opportunity in what would effectively become a knockout clash against SunRisers Hyderabad in Mullanpur.
For now, though, Punjab have finally found something that had deserted them for nearly a month — belief.
And in a tournament as unpredictable as the IPL, one gritty win can sometimes change everything.
