Shubman Gill Sets Sights on 2027 World Cup as India’s ODI Captain.
Newly-appointed ODI skipper Shubman Gill has laid out his roadmap for India’s 50-over future, making it clear that the 2027 World Cup in South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia is the ultimate target.
Gill, who took charge after Rohit Sharma stepped away from the format, said his focus will be on building a young, fearless unit capable of peaking at the right time. “The 2027 World Cup is the goal. Everything we do from now on – team combinations, roles, fitness standards – will be aligned to that,” Gill said in an interaction after being handed the reins.
The 25-year-old opener is among India’s brightest batting prospects and has already established himself as a key figure across formats. With a core group of players like Yashasvi Jaiswal, Ruturaj Gaikwad, Rinku Singh, and Kuldeep Sen in the mix, Gill stressed the importance of giving youngsters an extended run while blending experience where needed.
India, who last won the ODI World Cup in 2011, fell short in the 2023 final at home against Australia. Gill admitted the heartbreak still lingers but said the team must now look ahead.
“The past is past. Our job is to prepare with clarity and confidence so that in 2027, we go one step further,” he said. Under Gill, India will also look to manage workloads smartly, ensuring that players are in peak condition for the major tournaments in the next cycle, including the 2026 Champions Trophy in Pakistan.
The immediate challenge for Gill will be the three-match ODI series in Australia later this month, where India’s new-look squad will be tested in overseas conditions.
