Karnataka Government Constitutes SIT to Probe Mass Voter Deletions in Aland.
The Karnataka government on Saturday set up a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe allegations of large-scale voter deletions in Aland constituency, Kalaburagi district, during the 2023 assembly elections.
The move follows Congress leader Rahul Gandhi’s claims that thousands of voters were removed from the electoral rolls and that the Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar was allegedly protecting the “vote chors.”
The SIT will be headed by the Additional Director General of Police (CID), assisted by Superintendents of Police Saidulu Adavath and Shubhanwita.
The development comes after Aland MLA B R Patil lodged a complaint stating that 6,670 voters across 256 polling stations were unlawfully removed. Subsequent verification revealed that applications were filed for deletion of 6,018 voters, of which only 24 were valid and legally processed. The remaining 5,994 applications were allegedly submitted using different mobile numbers, without voters’ knowledge, and with mala fide intent, according to a government order.
The SIT has been granted police station powers under Section 2(U) of the Bharatiya Nagarika Suraksha Sanhita, 2023, and will investigate all related cases across Karnataka. The team will utilize CID and local police resources and submit its report to the competent courts, with a copy also forwarded to the state government.
