Smriti Mandhana Begins Captaincy Era with Series Win as India Dominate Zimbabwe in 2nd T20I

India registered a commanding nine-wicket victory over Zimbabwe in the second T20I in Raipur, taking an unassailable 2-0 lead in the series. Chasing a modest target of 103, the hosts reached 104/1 in just 8.5 overs, with captain Smriti Mandhana hitting the winning six to seal the contest in style.

The result marked a successful beginning to Mandhana’s tenure as India’s captain. Unlike the opening match, where the hosts faced a few nervous moments, the second encounter was dominated by aggressive batting and disciplined bowling.

Vice-captain Shafali Verma led the charge with a blistering 55 off just 25 deliveries, while Mandhana remained unbeaten on 47 from 25 balls. Their explosive partnership dismantled Zimbabwe’s bowling attack during the powerplay, with India racing to 76 runs in the first six overs.

Shafali was dismissed when India needed only seven more runs, leaving Mandhana to finish the chase. The Indian skipper completed the formalities with a towering six off Olinder Chare, capping a comprehensive performance.

Shafali and Mandhana Deliver a Batting Masterclass

Zimbabwe captain Josephine Nkomo would have hoped her bowlers could repeat their early success from the first T20I, when both Indian openers were dismissed cheaply. However, the visitors struggled to contain the pair this time.

Shafali immediately set the tone, striking Nyasha Gwanzura for a four and a six in the opening over. Mandhana soon joined the attack, and the two batters took turns punishing the Zimbabwean bowlers.

Shafali showcased her power with successive boundaries and sixes, while Mandhana responded with four consecutive boundaries in the fourth over. Their attacking approach left Zimbabwe searching for answers as the required run rate ceased to be a concern.

The partnership also marked their ninth fifty-plus stand in T20 internationals in the calendar year, the most by any pair in women’s cricket in a single year.

Speaking after the match, Mandhana praised her opening partner’s aggressive approach and explained that she was happy to rotate the strike when Shafali was in full flow. She added that the team intended to continue playing attacking cricket.

Shafali, meanwhile, credited her improved consistency for her performance. She revealed that she had spent time analysing Australian batters and identifying ways to contribute more consistently to the team.

Her innings earned her the Player of the Match award. During the knock, she also surpassed Mandhana’s tally for the most sixes by an Indian batter in women’s T20 internationals.

Indian Bowlers Restrict Zimbabwe to 102/8

India’s bowlers laid the foundation for the victory by restricting Zimbabwe to 102/8 in their allotted 20 overs.

Nandani Sharma provided an early breakthrough by dismissing Kelis Ndhlovu for a duck. Zimbabwe struggled to build momentum during the powerplay, managing only 20 runs and losing an early wicket.

The visitors suffered another setback soon after the fielding restrictions ended, when Biza was dismissed. Captain Josephine Nkomo and Chipo Tiripano then attempted to rebuild the innings, putting together a 45-run partnership for the fourth wicket.

Tiripano scored 34 off 32 deliveries, while Nkomo remained unbeaten on 27. Their stand offered Zimbabwe some stability after a difficult start, with Tiripano finding boundaries through inventive strokes, including consecutive reverse sweeps against left-arm spinner Shree Charani.

Zimbabwe collected 56 runs between the seventh and 15th overs, but India regained control when Mandhana introduced Niki Prasad into the attack.

Niki Prasad Makes an Impact with the Ball

Prasad, who had played a crucial role with the bat in the first T20I, delivered another important contribution. She broke the partnership by inducing an edge from Tiripano, which wicketkeeper Richa Ghosh caught safely.

Prasad struck again shortly afterwards, trapping Nyasha Gwanzura leg-before-wicket. The two quick dismissals prevented Zimbabwe from building a late-innings surge and left their total well below a challenging score.

India’s disciplined bowling and effective use of spin ensured the visitors finished on 102/8. However, the fielding unit will need to address concerns over dropped catches, an issue that could prove costly against stronger opposition.

India Look to Build Momentum Ahead of Future Challenges

The victory highlighted India’s growing confidence under Mandhana’s leadership and the emergence of players capable of contributing in different departments.

Shafali’s explosive batting, Mandhana’s composure and Prasad’s impact with both bat and ball provided encouraging signs for the team. The performance also demonstrated how quickly India can take control when their top order gets going.

While the series win offers a positive start to the new leadership phase, India will be keen to improve their fielding standards as they prepare for tougher international challenges ahead.
