Mandhana’s Record Century Powers India Into Women’s Asia Cup Semifinals

India secured their place in the Women’s Asia Cup semifinals in emphatic fashion, defeating Hong Kong by 137 runs at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium on Thursday.

Smriti Mandhana led the charge with a spectacular century as India posted 193/5 before their bowlers dismantled Hong Kong’s chase, bowling them out for just 56 in 16.2 overs.

The victory kept Harmanpreet Kaur’s team unbeaten in the tournament and made India the first side to qualify for the last four. The seven-time champions now sit atop Group A with four points and an impressive net run rate of +5.775.

Hong Kong’s defeat ended their campaign, while India will next face Pakistan on September 5, with the focus now shifting towards maintaining their perfect record.

INDIA FIND ANOTHER GEAR AFTER SLOW START

India began cautiously, with Mandhana and Shafali Verma taking time to settle. Only 26 runs came from the opening four overs before the innings suddenly burst into life.

Marina Lamplough’s final powerplay over proved costly as Shafali launched a fierce attack, hitting two sixes and two fours to take 22 runs from the over. India raced to 60/0 after six overs.

The opening stand produced 72 runs before Shafali departed for an entertaining 28 from 17 balls. Pratika Rawal managed only 10, while Richa Ghosh and Harmanpreet Kaur also failed to convert their starts.

Despite the middle-order setbacks, Mandhana remained in control and provided India with the platform they needed for a huge finish.

MANDHANA PRODUCES HISTORY-MAKING KNOCK

Mandhana initially played a controlled innings, allowing Shafali to attack at the other end. Once she reached her rhythm, however, the left-hander shifted into another gear.

She brought up her fifty from 39 deliveries with a six off Iqra Sahar and then launched a sustained assault on the Hong Kong bowlers.

Drives, pulls, sweeps and lofted shots flowed from Mandhana’s bat as the boundaries came at regular intervals. She reached her second T20I century from only 57 balls during the 17th over.

Mandhana eventually fell in the final over after smashing 124 from 64 deliveries, including 14 fours and seven sixes.

The innings also took her to another significant milestone. With her 18th international century, Mandhana moved clear of Laura Wolvaardt and Meg Lanning, who have 17 centuries each, to become the leading century-maker in women’s international cricket.

INDIAN BOWLERS LEAVE HONG KONG WITH NO WAY BACK

Hong Kong’s chase never threatened India’s imposing total.

The Indian bowlers restricted them to only 16 runs during the powerplay, maintaining pressure from the opening delivery. Kranti Gaud kept things tight before Nandani Sharma produced the first breakthrough.

Nandani cleverly varied her line and movement before drawing Mariko Hill into an error. She finished with outstanding figures of 3-0-6-2.

India’s spinners then took complete command. Prema Rawat claimed two wickets for 12 runs, including the dismissal of Hong Kong captain Natasha Miles, while Deepti Sharma delivered another economical spell, taking three wickets for just nine runs.

Shree Charani added two more wickets as Hong Kong’s lower order collapsed.

The innings ended at 56 in 16.2 overs, giving India a comprehensive 137-run victory and another dominant performance.

With their semifinal berth secured, India now turn their attention to Pakistan on September 5, with Mandhana’s record-breaking night providing another major boost to their title ambitions.
