T20 World Cup 2026: Australia eliminated, Zimbabwe reach Super 8 after Pallekele washout
Former champions Australia crashed out of the T20 World Cup in a shocking group-stage exit after Zimbabwe’s clash against Ireland was washed out at Pallekele International Cricket Stadium on February 17. The abandoned fixture confirmed Zimbabwe’s progression to the Super 8 stage alongside Sri Lanka from Group B, while Australia, Ireland, and Oman were officially knocked out.
This marks the first time in 17 years that Australia, the 2021 T20 World Cup champions, have failed to reach the Super 8 stage. After losing two of their first three group matches, Australia were dependent on other results. With Zimbabwe earning a point from the rain-affected match, Australia were mathematically eliminated.
Australia’s campaign had already faltered after an eight-wicket defeat to Sri Lanka on Monday and a surprise loss to Zimbabwe last week, which ultimately sealed their early exit. Their final group match against Oman now holds only pride at stake.
Zimbabwe’s comeback
Sikandar Raza’s Zimbabwe, who missed out on qualification for the 2024 T20 World Cup in the West Indies and the United States, staged a remarkable return by securing a spot in the Super 8 stage. They will aim to top Group B when they face co-hosts Sri Lanka on February 19 at R. Premadasa Stadium.
Rain spoils the Pallekele clash
Persistent rain delayed the toss and forced the ground to be covered for most of the day. Though conditions briefly improved, a returning drizzle prevented play. After extended discussions among officials, the curators, and the captains, the match was officially called off around 5:30 PM local time, confirming a washout and deciding the fate of the group.
Zimbabwe advance with a point from the abandoned match, while Australia’s hopes of a late-stage comeback ended in dramatic fashion.
