Fourteen-year-old Vaibhav Suryavanshi continued his remarkable rise on Tuesday, smashing his maiden Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy century at Eden Gardens — India’s premier domestic T20 stage.

The Bihar prodigy reached his hundred off just 57 balls against Prithvi Shaw-led Maharashtra, clearing the ropes seven times and striking as many fours in a commanding innings on a surface that demanded patience.

Carrying his bat, Vaibhav finished unbeaten on 108 off 61 deliveries, powering Bihar to 176 for 3. With more than half the team’s runs coming from his blade, the teenager shouldered the responsibility of steadying the innings on a tricky Kolkata pitch.

The milestone adds to an already staggering résumé: Vaibhav now boasts three T20 centuries — including a record-breaking IPL ton for Rajasthan Royals — all before turning 15.

His knock on Tuesday showcased his ability to shift gears seamlessly. Vaibhav took 37 balls to reach his fifty, assessing the conditions after early blows saw Bihar slide to 31 for 2 inside the powerplay. He rebuilt the innings with Aakash Raj through a vital 70-run stand for the third wicket.

Displaying maturity well beyond his age, Vaibhav played spinners Vicky Ostwal and Jalaj Saxena with care, choosing his moments to attack. His smart reading of the surface and clinical strike selection highlighted why many believe an India call-up may not be far away.

The teenager’s purple patch extends beyond domestic cricket. A key performer for India A at the recent Rising Stars Asia Cup in Doha, he piled up 239 runs — including a 32-ball hundred against the UAE — at an average of 59.75 and a strike rate of 243.87.

Vaibhav’s early ascent has been extraordinary. Having made his Ranji Trophy debut at just 12, he shot to national attention with a breakout IPL season for Rajasthan Royals, smashing 252 runs at a strike rate of 206.55, including a 38-ball 101 against Gujarat Titans — the second-fastest century in IPL history — becoming the youngest centurion in the league.

He has also impressed at the U-19 level, hammering a 78-ball century against Australia Under-19s, the fastest by an Indian in U-19 Tests.
