India will begin the upcoming T20I series against Zimbabwe as clear favourites.
With greater depth, star power and a proven track record in bilateral cricket, the visitors are expected to dominate. On paper, the gulf between the two sides appears significant.
However, T20 cricket rarely follows the script.
India head into the series looking to bounce back after a disappointing run in the United Kingdom, where they failed to register a single T20I victory. The tour exposed inconsistencies in both batting and bowling, highlighting that the side is still searching for its ideal combination despite its immense talent.
Zimbabwe, on the other hand, are a team on the rise. Under the leadership of veteran all-rounder Sikandar Raza, the hosts have transformed into a confident outfit capable of challenging established cricketing nations. Emerging stars such as Brian Bennett, Blessing Muzarabani and Richard Ngarava have added quality and belief to a side that has steadily climbed the ladder in international cricket.
Zimbabwe’s World Cup campaign changed perceptions
Zimbabwe’s performance at the 2026 T20 World Cup marked a turning point in the team’s journey. Although they did not advance beyond the Super Eight stage, they proved they could compete with the world’s best.
Their biggest statement came against defending champions Australia, whom they stunned by 23 runs in one of the tournament’s biggest upsets. Bennett anchored Zimbabwe’s innings with an unbeaten 64, while Ryan Burl and Tadiwanashe Marumani played crucial supporting knocks to help post a competitive total.
The bowlers then completed the job brilliantly. Muzarabani ripped through Australia’s batting order with figures of 4/17, while Brad Evans chipped in with three wickets as Australia were bundled out for 146.
Zimbabwe also impressed against India despite ending on the losing side. Chasing a daunting target of 257, Bennett smashed an unbeaten 97 off just 59 balls, fearlessly taking on India’s attack. Although India secured a comfortable victory, Zimbabwe’s spirited response demonstrated they could challenge elite opposition rather than simply make up the numbers.
Momentum continues after Bangladesh series
Zimbabwe carried that confidence into their recent home series against Bangladesh. While Bangladesh edged the three-match T20I series 2-1, Zimbabwe claimed both the ODI series and the one-off Test, further strengthening belief within the squad.
The hosts won the opening T20I convincingly after posting 170/6 before restricting Bangladesh with disciplined bowling. Muzarabani and Ngarava once again spearheaded the pace attack, while Zimbabwe remained competitive throughout the series despite narrowly missing out in the decider.
Their bowling unit has become one of their biggest strengths. Muzarabani has developed into a genuine fast-bowling threat with pace and bounce, while Ngarava’s ability with the new ball has troubled several top-order batters.
At the centre of it all remains captain Sikandar Raza. Even at 40, the all-rounder continues to lead from the front, contributing with both bat and ball while mentoring a talented new generation.
Raza expects a competitive contest
Ahead of the series, Raza rejected suggestions that Zimbabwe would merely play the role of underdogs.
“Both countries will have an equal chance in this series. Zimbabwe has been playing consistent and entertaining cricket, and I believe this will be a very exciting contest,” he said.
The Zimbabwe skipper also pointed out that both teams are undergoing transitions, adding that he does not expect a one-sided series.
While India undoubtedly possess superior depth and individual brilliance, Zimbabwe’s recent performances suggest they are no longer a side that can be taken lightly.
The visitors remain favourites to win the series. But in a format where momentum can change within a few overs, Zimbabwe have shown they possess enough quality, confidence and firepower to spring another surprise.
Writing them off before a ball has been bowled could prove to be a costly mistake.
