US President Donald Trump on Friday (local time) said his meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska was “extremely productive,” noting that the two leaders reached agreement on “many points,” with only a “few issues” still unresolved.
Speaking after the closed-door talks at Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson in Anchorage, Trump hinted at progress on the Ukraine conflict but cautioned that “there’s no deal until there’s a deal.”
The summit, described by both sides as “mutually respectful,” lasted over three hours. At the joint press conference, Trump said: “We had an extremely productive meeting, and many points were agreed to. There are just a very few that are left. We didn’t get there, but we have a very good chance of getting there.” He added that while no final resolution has been reached, he remains optimistic about peace talks with Putin.
Putin, for his part, stressed that Russia is interested in ending the war but insisted that its “primary causes” must be addressed for any settlement to last. “We have always considered the Ukrainian nation a brotherly nation. Everything that’s happening is a tragedy for us. We are sincerely interested in putting an end to it. But for the settlement to be lasting and long-term, we need to eliminate the roots of the conflict,” he said.
As the summit wrapped up, Trump hinted at a possible follow-up meeting, while Putin smiled and responded in English: “Next time in Moscow.”
