Trump Rules Out Ceasefire, Pushes for Direct Ukraine-Russia Peace Agreement After Alaska Talks.
US President Donald Trump said his late-night discussion with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy “went very well” following his high-profile meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska. Trump ruled out an immediate ceasefire in Ukraine, advocating instead for a direct “peace agreement” to formally end the war.
Zelenskyy described the talks as a “long and substantive conversation” and expressed support for a trilateral meeting between Ukraine, the US, and Russia. The discussion began as a one-on-one exchange before European leaders were invited to join.
Taking to Truth Social, Trump said: “A great and very successful day in Alaska! The meeting with President Vladimir Putin of Russia went very well, as did a late-night call with President Zelenskyy of Ukraine, and various European leaders, including the highly respected Secretary General of NATO.”
Trump emphasized that a comprehensive peace deal, rather than a temporary ceasefire, would best end the “horrific war” and potentially save millions of lives. He also confirmed that Zelenskyy will visit Washington, DC, on Monday, with plans for a possible trilateral meeting involving Putin.
Trump described his meeting with Putin as “extremely productive” and rated it “10 out of 10,” noting minor unresolved points. He added that he would advise Zelenskyy to pursue a peace deal, underlining that Ukraine must eventually make peace.
Zelenskyy confirmed his upcoming US visit, saying: “It is important that Europeans are involved at every stage to ensure reliable security guarantees together with America. We also discussed positive signals from the American side regarding participation in guaranteeing Ukraine’s security. We continue to coordinate our positions with all partners.”
During Zelenskyy’s previous visit to the White House, tensions had flared when Trump and Vice President JD Vance criticized the Ukrainian leader over the war, accusing him of showing insufficient gratitude after challenging diplomatic approaches with Russia.
