Charlie Kirk Shooting: Suspect Tyler Robinson Admitted Killing in Texts to Partner, Court Records Show

Tyler Robinson, the 22-year-old accused of killing conservative activist Charlie Kirk, allegedly confessed to the crime in a series of text messages to his transgender partner, according to newly filed court documents.

Kirk, the 31-year-old founder of Turning Point USA, was shot in the neck during a speech at Utah Valley University last week. Robinson was arrested a day later and has since been charged with murder, with prosecutors calling the case an example of rising political violence.

Texts Reveal Confession and Motive
Court filings detail how Robinson told his partner he had planned the killing for more than a week. In one message, he wrote: “I had enough of his hatred. Some hate can’t be negotiated out.” He also left behind handwritten notes outlining his intent, one hidden under a keyboard at home.

When his partner questioned him after the shooting, Robinson replied: “I am, I’m sorry.” He allegedly directed her to delete their conversations and avoid speaking with police, prompting an additional witness-tampering charge.

Evidence Recovered
Police later searched Robinson’s home, where they found bullet-ridden targets and a shell casing etched in the same style as those from the abandoned rifle used in the attack. The rifle, reportedly his grandfather’s, was left wrapped in a towel near the crime scene.

According to filings, Robinson worried his father — described as a staunch Trump supporter — would ask questions about the missing weapon. He also texted about “engraving bullets” and joked about seeing memes appear in media coverage.

Family Intervention
Investigators said Robinson’s parents persuaded him to meet with a retired sheriff’s deputy, a family friend, who convinced him to surrender. He was arrested near St. George, Utah, about 240 miles from the shooting site.

Prosecutors told the court Robinson had shifted politically in the past year, becoming more sympathetic to LGBTQ rights while dating a transgender woman.

Charges and Federal Probe
Robinson faces charges of felony discharge of a firearm, obstruction of justice, and witness tampering, all carrying heavy prison sentences. Enhancements include allegations of political-motivated violence and committing crimes in the presence of children.

The FBI has launched a broader investigation into Robinson’s online activity, particularly his participation in a Discord chatroom with more than 20 members. FBI Director Kash Patel told lawmakers agents are “running out every lead” to determine whether the Kirk shooting was part of a larger pattern of political or ideological violence.
