UNSC Approves Afghan Taliban FM Amir Khan Muttaqi’s India Visit (Oct 9–16).
The UN Security Council (UNSC) has approved Afghan Taliban Foreign Minister Amir Khan Muttaqi’s visit to India, top sources told News18. Muttaqi, who is under sanctions as per UNSC Resolution 1988 targeting Taliban leaders, required prior clearance for international travel. The exemption allows him to be in New Delhi from October 9 to 16, following a visit to Russia on October 6.
The approval comes after India sought permission for the visit, marking a significant development in India-Taliban relations. Muttaqi is expected to participate in high-level meetings in New Delhi, underscoring India’s strategic diplomatic positioning amid regional dynamics involving Pakistan and China.
Since the fall of Kabul in August 2021, Muttaqi has served as Afghanistan’s foreign minister. Earlier this year, in May, he held an informal trilateral meeting in Beijing with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi and Pakistani Finance Minister Ishaq Dar to discuss expanding the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) to Afghanistan—a move India opposes due to the project passing through Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK).
