Sunil Grover became a household name with his unforgettable characters on The Kapil Sharma Show.
His sharp comic timing and unique performances won over audiences, making him one of the show’s biggest breakout stars. But not many know that when Sunil first joined the show, the makers considered removing him because they felt he wasn’t a good fit.
In a conversation with Lallantop Cinema, actor Upasana Singh, who was also part of the show, revealed that Sunil’s early days weren’t easy. “When he initially came in, he spoke slowly. The creative team felt he wouldn’t be able to keep up and wanted to fire him. I told them he’s a very good actor and that they should keep him on. Sunil and everyone else knows this,” she said.
Upasana also opened up about Sunil’s personal struggles before the show took off. “When Kapil’s show started, he was not well. He told me he had been hospitalised because of depression. He didn’t have much work at the time. When he came to my house with Kapil, I didn’t even recognise him because he wasn’t doing anything then. But he proved himself, and we’re very close now,” she added.
Sunil Grover’s portrayal of characters like Gutthi, Dr Mashoor Gulati, and Rinku Bhabhi reshaped Indian TV comedy, showcasing his versatility and emotional depth. His chemistry with Kapil Sharma—on-screen banter, improvisation, and effortless timing—became the heart of the show and a major reason for its massive success. While their off-screen differences have occasionally made headlines, fans continue to cherish their iconic performances, which remain popular even years later.
